Understanding the distinction between a heart attack and cardiac arrest is crucial for effective emergency response. A heart attack, medically known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, typically by a blood clot. This can lead to significant chest pain and may cause damage to heart tissue, but the person may still be conscious and breathing and may not require immediate CPR.

In contrast, cardiac arrest is a life-threatening condition where the heart stops beating effectively, leading to a lack of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This situation requires immediate intervention, specifically CPR and, potentially, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), to restore normal heart function and prevent death.
